Country music icon Willie Nelson is set to release a cover of “The Border,” originally penned by Rodney Crowell in 2019. The song is part of Nelson’s forthcoming album, also titled “The Border,” which was announced on the singer’s official Instagram account.
Nelson’s choice of “The Border” as both the lead single and the title for his new album has sparked discussions given his vocal support for President Joe Biden during the 2020 election campaign. At the time, Biden’s promises to relax some of the border security and immigration policies of his predecessor, Donald Trump, were seen as pivotal to his campaign platform.
However, the song and the album’s focus on border patrol agents is an ode to their often overlooked contributions and sacrifices.
While Nelson has not shied away from political advocacy in the past, his latest project offers a reflective and possibly reconciliatory gesture towards understanding and appreciating the multifaceted dimensions of border security.

“The Border,” originally written and performed by Rodney Crowell, is a song that dives into the complexities and human stories at the heart of border issues. Released in 2019, the song is part of Crowell’s broader body of work that often touches on timely topics.
The lyrics adopt the viewpoint of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer. “There’s a price on the head of every border patrol,” Nelson sings. “Where the smugglers do business, that’s where I make a stand. I know this old desert, like the back of my hand.”
“I come home to Maria, in a bulletproof vest, with the weight of the whole wide world barring down on my chest. It’s just a border I guess.”
Biden has faced huge amounts of criticism regarding his approach to the border, particularly in relation to the construction of a border wall and his broader immigration policies. Republicans have accused him of performing a “180” on his stance against the border wall. They also argue that he has not done enough to curb the flow of migrants.
For a broader perspective, at the end of 2023, the U.S. Border Patrol had nearly 250,000 encounters with migrants crossing into the United States from Mexico in December, setting the highest monthly total on record. This marked a significant increase from previous years, showcasing a trend of escalating numbers of encounters since 2020.
