Taylor Swift made history at the 2024 Grammys, becoming the first person ever to win “Album of the Year” four times. That came when her album “Midnights,” released to much fanfare in 2023, took the top award. Not everyone was fawning over Taylor, however, with some on social media expressing their displeasure with how, in their view, rudely she acted when she accepted their award.

Essentially, they argued that Ms. Swift should have done more to show her gratitude to Celine Dion, who presented the award to Taylor despite having been diagnosed with an incurable neurological disease called “stiff man syndrome.” To many viewers, it appeared that Taylor ignored Dion when accepting the award despite Dion’s difficulty in being on stage.

For example, one commenter on Fox News’ post on Facebook about Taylor’s Grammys win wrote, “Good for her but she should absolutely be ashamed of herself!! She walked on stage, took the Grammy from Celine & dismissed her like she was no one! Celine Dion is battling a disease & I’m sure struggled to even show up! I felt so sorry for her & the way she was treated! Somebody, please teach Ms. Taylor some manners!”

Trying to rebut that, one commenter said, “she gets one minute. She didn’t dismiss her. She accepted the award and went to the microphone like she was told to do. Geez this is some god awful projection here.” Firing back, however, someone else in the anti-Taylor camp said, “girl she acknowledged everyone else on stage but her. She just grabbed the award and did her speech ”

A similar battle played out on X (formerly Twitter). There, one poster said, “Did Taylor Swift disrespect or snub Celine Dion? No. Was she clearly distracted by someone behind her at the exact moment Celine Dion handed her the award? 100000%. Stop overanalyzing her every move looking for proof that she should be hated because you already don’t like her.” Disagreeing, another commenter added, “I adore this woman. She’s almost my entire personality. You’re right that the sharks circled immediately. But Celine is Celine, and this was cringy. I bet Taylor would agree watching it back.”

A different poster more directly wrote that she thought Taylor acted in a rude manner, saying, “The way Taylor Swift just took the Grammy out of Celine Dion’s hand and didn’t even hug her or thank her … how rude. #GRAMMYs”

Similarly, another poster wrote, “honestly aside from Taylor not acknowledging Céline, it’s just rude in general to not acknowledge the person giving you an award with a hello or a thank you. period. point. blank.” Agreeing with that poster, a commenter added, “Right. No one is asking for a speech.or her to bow down. It’s the lack of basic acknowledgement. Not even looking at someone that you take something from. People act like basic courtesy isn’t a thing.”

The spat over Swift’s conduct comes amidst a budding fight between her and individuals on the MAGA right, such as Trump lawyer Alina Habba, over her political views. Swift backed Biden in 2020 and is rumored to be ready to do so in 2024 in an attempt to swing the election to Biden.
